About UMAP

UMAP is the premier international conference for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users, to groups of users, and that collect, represent, and model user information.  UMAP is the successor to the biennial User Modeling (UM) and Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-based Systems (AH) conferences that were merged in 2009. It is sponsored by ACM SIGCHI and SIGWEB, and organized under the auspices of User Modeling Inc. The poroceedings are published by ACM and will be part of the ACM Digital Library.

UMAP 2016 covers a wide variety of research areas where adaptation may be applied. This include (but is in no way limited to) a number of domains in which researchers are engendering significant innovations based on advances in user modeling and adaptation: recommender systems; adaptive educational systems; intelligent user interfaces; eCommerce; advertising; digital humanities; social networks; personalized health; entertainment, and many more.

UMAP 2016 took place at the campus of Dalhousie University in Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia and the major cultural centre of Canada’s Atlantic provinces.

News

• We have put together a short evaluation form to see if the new things we tried this year (shorter presentations, posters for all presentations, etc.) worked well. Please, take 5 min to fill it! It will help make the next conference, UMAP 2017 (Bratislava, Slovakia) better. 
• The UMAP 2016 Proceedings are available online through the ACM Digital library.  UMAP 2016 Extended Proceedings areavailable online in the CEUR-WS Library.

• The Best Paper Award goes to Michael Eagle, Albert Corbett, John Stamper and Bruce Mclaren (CMU) and Ryan Baker (Columbia U) for their paper "Predicting Individual Differences for Learner Modeling in Intelligent Tutorsfrom Previous Learner Activities" 
• The two James Chen Best Student Paper Awards go to: 
  Lukas Lerche, Dietmar Jannach, Malte Ludewig (Dortmund U) for their paper "On the Value of Reminders within E-Commerce Recommendations"  
  and David Graus (U Amsterdam), Paul Bennett, Ryen White, Eric Horvitz (Microsoft) for their paper "Analyzing and Predicting Task Reminders"  

Three Outstanding Paper Awards were given to: 

1) Patrick Donnelly, Nathaniel Blanchard, Borhan Samei, Andrew Olney, Xiaoyi Sun, Brooke Ward, Sean Kelly, Sidney D'Mello for their paper "Automatic Teacher Modeling from Live Classroom Audio"  
2) Benjamin Gras, Armelle Brun, Boyer Anne for their paper "Identifying Grey Sheep Users in Collaborative Filtering: a Distribution-Based Technique" 

3) Alexandria Vail, Joseph Grafsgaard, Kristy Elizabeth Boyer, Eric Wiebe, James Lester for their paper "Gender Differences in Facial Expressions of Affect During Learning"

4) Shitian Shen and Min Chi for their paper "Reinforcement Learning: the Sooner the Better or the Later the Better?"

• Today (Monday, July 11th) is the last day to register at the regular fee. From Tuesday, July 12, 00:00 Atlantic time, the On-Site Fee kicks in! So if you plan to register, hurry up and do it today!
• Last minute program changes: room swap on Saturday. Tutorials move to room 264,  W9 PALE moves to room 170. 
• Instructions for presenters of the main conference  (full, short papers, extended abstracts, doctoral consortium papers, late breaking results and posters) have been published.
• We have received additional NSF funding for US students to attend UMAP'2016. Therefore we extended the application deadline until June 17. US students presenters at workshops, posters, LBR, papers and certainly DC are strongly encouraged to apply. Inquiries regarding NSF funding eligibility should be addressed to Sidney D'Mello (see contacts above). 
• TheFull Program of the Main Conference has been published. The programs of the individual workshops will be available through the individual workshop websites. 
• The list of accepted Late-breaking Results, Posters and Demos have been published.  The Workshop organizers have been notifying authors today about acceptance of their papers. The programs of the workshops will be published on the workshop websites. 
• Instructions for students who want to volunteer and ask for financial support have been published.
• A schedule of UMAP has been published. Changes are still likely, especially with respect to the workshops. 
• Two half-day Tutorials will be presented at UMAP: T1: Semantics-Aware Techniques for Social Media Analysis, User Modeling, and Recommender Systems by Pasquale Lops and Cataldo Musto and T2: Games, Gamification and Personalization by Amon Rapp.
• The Deadline for Workshop paper submissions has been extended to May 16.  
• More information about student funding has been added (under "Registration").
• Doctoral Consortium Authors have been notified. The list of accepted DC presentations is posted already online (under "Programme"). 
• Instructions for formatting camera-ready papers for the ACM proceedings have been sent out to authors. Specific instructions will be sent to authors directly by ACM Sheridan Printing. Authors need to register by May 1! 
• Registration is now open (April 19). Also information about accommodations and how to book them is available under menu item "Venue" above. 
• The list of accepted full papers, short papers and extended abstracts is posted under "Programme".
• We have 3 confirmed keynote speakers: Lada Adamic (Facebook), Sandra Carberry (University of Delaware), and Hossein Derakhshan - shared keynote speaker with Hypertext 2016 on Wednesday, July 13.
• Nine workshops will be held with UMAP 2016. Check them out! The deadline for workshop papers is May 7.
