ACM UMAP 2027 is committed to promoting equity and inclusion for students and early-career researchers attending the conference, particularly those from developing countries. In support of this commitment, and thanks to the generous contributions of UM, Inc. and ACM SIGWEB, ACM UMAP 2027 is pleased to offer grants to help support conference attendance.
In addition, funding opportunities not directly managed by ACM UMAP 2027 are available to interested applicants. Each fund targets a specific audience, so applicants should verify that they meet the eligibility requirements before applying. Further details are provided below. Benefits from these grants cannot be combined.
Students who receive a grant are expected to serve as student volunteers for UMAP 2027. The organizers reserve the right to reduce or revoke awarded funding if a student does not fulfill the required volunteer duties.
Gary Marsden Travel Awards (GMTA)
The SIGCHI Gary Marsden Travel Award (GMTA) is a grant offered by SIGCHI for its conferences, including UMAP. It is named in memory of Gary Marsden, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in South Africa.
This grant is not directly administered by ACM UMAP 2027, so it follows different rules and deadlines. Please review the information below.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants include undergraduate and graduate students, early-career researchers (≤ 5 years post-graduation), and individuals facing financial hardship or lacking institutional support.
Application Deadlines & Process
Applications for this grant are accepted monthly, with submissions due by the 9th of each month at 11:59 PM AoE. Because GMTA applications must be submitted at least one month before the conference begins, the final deadline for ACM UMAP 2027 is May 8. Applicants may apply before receiving an acceptance notification.

ACM UMAP 2027 Grants
These grants are made possible through support from ACM SIGWEB, UM, Inc., the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), and potential industry sponsors.
Eligibility
- Funding from UM, Inc.: students.
- ACM SIGWEB: students and early-career researchers from economically developing countries. For a list of eligible countries, please refer to the ACM country listing .
- U.S. NSF: students actively enrolled at U.S. universities or institutions.
Special Rules
- ACM Student Membership: students must hold an ACM Student Membership. Membership fees are not covered by the grant.
- Registration Support: funding used to support or waive student registration covers only the early-bird registration rate available to ACM Student Members.
- Required Documentation: students must complete the application form and provide a support letter from their advisor confirming their student status and identifying any other available financial support, including the amount of support from other sources.
- NSF Travel Requirement: students receiving NSF funding must book flights through U.S.-flagged carriers or eligible codeshare flights with U.S.-flagged carriers.
Grant Assignment Criteria
Grants will be awarded based on the following priorities:
- Student Status: preference will be given to students.
- Accepted Contributions: preference will be given to authors of accepted contributions, with priority in the following order: doctoral consortium, main track, short paper, and other categories.
- Residency: applicants residing in an economically developing country, as defined by the ACM list, will be favored.
- Underrepresented Countries: applicants from countries that were underrepresented at UMAP 2025 will also receive priority.
Note: expenses other than registration fees may be partially covered, subject to available funds.
Student application forms will be released by mid-February 2027.
